An Unknown Photographer in 1936 Berlin
In 1936 an unknown Hungarian photographer, possibly a textiles merchant, visit Berlin at the beginning of the Olympic Games. He toured the city and saw all the sights, all decked out in Olympic rings and swastika flags. In this video I take a look at his tour of the city and discuss some here and there, then and now with Fausto & Kassi from Underpaid Mantis, who edit my videos and are full on Berlinerds like me. We take a look at Friedrichstrasse, the City Palace, the Victory Column, the Reichstag, and more. It’s a fun journey through the city as it was at the darkest of times, and we thought it was a nice way to send off 2025 and welcome in the new year. ++++++ Patreon: https://patreon.com/whitlamsberlin ++++++ Want *more* Berlin history? Hitler's Illusion of Democracy

Built in the 1840s by Joseph Kroll as a grand entertainment hall and garden, it was designed for music, dining, and leisure, part of a wave of new cultural spaces in a rapidly growing city. By the end of the 19th century it had become the city’s second state opera, always overshadowed by the royal house Unter den Linden, but known for experimentation and a more accessible public atmosphere. During the Weimar Republic it was reborn under conductor Otto Klemperer as a centre of modernism. His productions of Hindemith, Stravinsky, and Schoenberg brought innovation, controversy, and fierce criticism from conservatives. The Kroll Opera closed in 1931 amid the Depression and political hostility to its avant-garde approach. Two years later it reopened for a very different purpose. After the Reichstag fire, the parliament relocated there, and on 23 March 1933, Hitler’s Enabling Act was passed inside its auditorium, ending parliamentary democracy in Germany. In the years that followed, the building hosted major Nazi-era sessions including Hitler’s justification of the 1934 purge, his declarations of foreign policy in 1936 and 1939, and his final wartime addresses in 1941 and 1942. When Berlin was bombed, the Kroll Opera was hit repeatedly. By the Battle of Berlin in 1945 it was a ruin used by German defenders to fire on Soviet troops attacking the Reichstag. The remains stood for a few years after the war before being cleared in 1951. Today, the site is an open space near the Chancellery. There is a small monument for the Polish victims of WWII, and a little explainer on Germany’s September 1, 1939 invasion of Poland - both are relatively new. ++++++ Want *more* Berlin history? The WWII Ruins of Berlin's Most Beautiful Station
Explore the forgotten history of Berlin’s Anhalter Bahnhof with Ilja Nieuwland from 19th-century splendour to Nazi plans, wartime ruin, and Cold War demolition. Once hailed as one of Europe’s greatest railway stations, Anhalter Bahnhof was a symbol of Berlin’s ambitions, triumphs, and in the 20th Centruy, its tragedies. In this interview, historian Ilja Nieuwland (The Lost Termini of Berlin) uncovers the remarkable life of the station. We dive into its origins in the 1830s, when the railway age began reshaping the German capital, and follow its rise into a lavish landmark that welcomed travellers from across Europe. The Anhalter’s story is also one of power and ideology. Under the Nazis, the station stood at the edge of Hitler’s vision for a monumental new Berlin. It became a backdrop for both dreams of grandeur and the grim reality of war, surviving bombings only to be partly erased in the aftermath. Today, just a single fragment remains — the monumental portico on Askanischer Platz an out of place ruin in a city that no longer needs such a grand station, despite protests from locals once to save it, and a later movement to rebuild it. Is EAST BERLIN Disappearing?
This show runs on PATREON! Become a supporter here: https://patreon.com/whitlamsberlin ++++++ Want to find all of these yourself? Here you go: https://tinyurl.com/3u3f8pnh This turned out a little different to how I thought it would be! My initial list included loads more places, honestly, I could fill hours and hours with this stuff. Alas, a project must be manageable, deadlines must be met! Here’s a little overview of each of the places I covered on this little walk:SED Parteihochschule Karl Marx The SED Parteihochschule Karl Marx was East Germany’s elite training school for loyal party officials. It operated under rigid Stalinist control for decades, shaping future bureaucrats in Marxism-Leninism before closing after reunification. The former campus on Rungestraße now houses luxury flats. Otto Nagel Haus The Otto Nagel Haus was a museum devoted to the communist painter Otto Nagel, a working-class artist the GDR celebrated as a model antifascist. Opened in 1973, it presented him as proof of socialist virtue and cultural continuity. It closed quietly in 1995 and the building now holds a photographic archive. KPD Headquarters, Wallstraße At Wallstraße, the Communist Party reassembled in 1945 after years of exile and persecution. The survivors gathered here to rebuild the organisation, but suspicion ran deep. Old comrades were questioned, loyalty tested, and denunciations resurfaced. The atmosphere of control and mistrust that began here shaped the political culture of the GDR. Ahornblatt The Ahornblatt was one of East Berlin’s most striking modernist buildings. Built in the early 1970s by architects Gerhard Lehmann and Rüdiger Plaethe with engineer Ulrich Müther, its maple-leaf-shaped roof was a masterpiece of thin-shell concrete design. It served as a canteen and social space before being controversially demolished in 2000 despite its listed status. Central Committee Building, Werderscher Markt The former Reichsbank extension at Werderscher Markt became the Central Committee headquarters of the ruling Socialist Unity Party in 1959. From here, the Politbüro governed the GDR, issuing orders that overrode ministries and dictated every aspect of national life. The entire Central Committee resigned in 1989. The building is now part of the German Foreign Office complex. Ministry for Foreign Affairs Across the street once stood the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, built in 1967 by Josef Kaiser. Its bronze and glass façade was designed to convey openness and modernity, but the ministry had little power. Real decisions came from the Central Committee across the road. It was demolished in 1995 and the site now forms part of Schinkelplatz. Staatsratsgebäude Completed in 1964, the Staatsratsgebäude housed the State Council, the collective head of state that replaced the presidency after Wilhelm Pieck’s death. It symbolised the merging of party and state leadership under Walter Ulbricht and later Erich Honecker. The building survives largely unchanged and now serves as the European School of Management and Technology. Palast der Republik The Palast der Republik opened in 1976 as both parliament and leisure complex, filled with theatres, cafés, and concert halls under its copper-tinted glass façade. It embodied the GDR’s self-confidence in the 1970s but was later closed for asbestos and demolished in 2008. The rebuilt City Palace and Humboldt Forum now stand in its place. ++++++ Want *more* Berlin history? He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted, "Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.""Fallen is Babylon! Fallen is Babylon!"Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea, and said, "With such violence the great city of Babylon will be thrown down, never to be found again. The music of harpists and musicians, will never be heard in you again. No workman of any trade will ever be found in you again. The sound of a millstone will never be heard in you again. The light of a lamp will never shine in you again. The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again.""Fallen is Babylon! Fallen is Babylon!""Salvation and glory and power belong to our God, for true and just are his judgments. He has condemned the great prostitute who corrupted the earth by her adulteries. Hallelujah! The smoke from her goes up for ever and ever." **************************************************** #symphonicmetal #symphonicblackmetal #symphonicdeathmetal #symphonicmetalband #symphonicband #metalmusic #metal #heavymetal #metalforever #metalberlin #berlinmetal #sanity #sanityberlin #sanityband #sanitymetal #revelation #revelationalbum #revelationsanity #sanityrevelation #christianmusic #christiansymphonicmetal #christiansymphonicblackmetal #christiansymphonicdeathmetal #christiansymphonicmetalband #christiansymphonicband #christianmetalmusic #christianmetal #christianheavymetal #sanitychristianmetal #aggressiveworship
